September 9, 2006 TAV, the international brand of Turkey, conveyed its experience in airport operations, and opened into service the İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport New International Terminal, which is the newest terminal in Europe. TAV Airports Holding completed İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport International Terminal, the newest terminal in Europe, 8 months prior to the actual completion date of May 2007, and opened it for service on September 9, with the attendance of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
TAV CEO Dr. Sani Şener, who noted that in terms of international traffic, Adnan Menderes is an airport that newly started direct international flights, said,: “In the recent years, the industrial and commercial activities of Anatolia increased. From the İzmir point of view, transportation from İzmir to other cities in Turkey gained significance. In this sense, the Adnan Menderes Airport will be a centre for responding to the commercial traffic increasing in Anatolia”. The Adnan Menderes Airport International Terminal, with an annual passenger capacity of 3 million, will reach a capacity of 5 million passengers after the new terminal is opened for service. TAV, which had been formed as a joint venture of Tepe and Akfen groups, is specialised in airport constructions, design, financing and operations. TAV currently operates İstanbul Atatürk Airport, which is Turkey’s gate opening to the world, and in 2006, after the İzmir Adnan Menderes New International Terminal, it will include in its portfolio the operation of the Ankara Esenboğa International Airport. TAV will convey its expertise in airport operations to İzmir as well, and will employ the know-how it has acquired from the İstanbul Atatürk Airport in other airports that TAV will operate. TAV has accelerated the investments abroad, and is recently awarded several tenders, and most recently, as a first in airport operations, it has undertaken the Tbilisi International Airport in Georgia through the Build, Operate and Transfer model. The construction of Batumi Airport in Georgia, Cairo TB3 in Egypt, and Doha International Terminal Building in Qatar are being carried out by TAV.
