Focusing on the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certificate receiving projects in the transportation sector, the report included 12 projects, one of which was Izmir Adnan Menderes.

TAV Ege General Manager Erkan Balcı stated: “TAV Airports places sustainability to the focus of all of our operations. We endeavor to minimize the impacts of our operations on the environment while providing a reliable, comfortable and fast service to our passengers. We have the goal to minimize our carbon emissions by continuing our investments in energy efficiency. Moreover, some of our energy comes from the energy that we generate from solar energy. We closely follow up international studies on this issue and continue working to comply with the highest standards."

U.S. Green Buildings Council CEO Mahesh Ramanujam stated: “As transportation projects usually have high operational costs, water and energy consumptions and waste productions, they have serious impacts on our daily lives and environment. These projects transform into efficient, economical and sustainable transportation units through the implementation of LEED green building strategies and contribute to the economy, environment, efficiency and people's wellbeing".

Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport Domestic Terminal is the first terminal building that was awarded LEED certificate in Turkey. The airport neutralized its carbon emissions and was listed amongst the top 20 environmentally-friendly airports in Europe.

Having 5,200 sqm of photovoltaic panels at its new terminal, the airport produces 450,000 kW/hour energy per year from solar energy. Generating electrical, heating and cooling energies from natural gas, trigeneration plant was put into operation by TAV, which resulted in 37 percent efficiency in energy costs.

Providing service to 12 million passengers last year, Adnan Menderes Airport has commenced a series of practices in order to use the energy efficiently without compromising passenger comfort. Waste management, automatic lighting control, using LED fixtures, trigeneration plant producing electrical, heating and cooling energies from natural gas can be given amongst the finest examples of these practices.
