Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport Awarded Green Initiative Airport Of The Year At Doha Aviation Summit

The Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport was awarded “Green Initiative Airport of the Year” at the Doha Aviation Summit. It received the award while being accepted into the Airports Carbon Accreditation Program administered by ACI Europe.

At the International Aviation Summit 2009, held this year in Doha, Qatar, the most successful aviation companies were recognized at the event, organized to entertain authorities of the international aviation industry. Among the award recipients, Adnan Menderes Airport received the “Green Initiative Airport of the Year” award at the summit. General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI) General Manager Orhan Birdal and M. Sani Şener, Chief Executive Officer of TAV Airports Holding--operator of the Adnan Menderes International Terminal--received the award from United Arab Emirates Civil Aviation Authority General Director Saif Al Suwaidi.

Orhan Birdal talked about how proud they are to receive an award on behalf of Turkey, stating that “Receiving this award offers a strong indication of the current state of the Turkish aviation industry and the success of the Public-Private Partnerships supervised by the State Airports Authority.”

TAV Airports Holding Chief Executive Officer M. Sani Şener, commented “At TAV Airports Holding we have carried out many projects concerned with environmental awareness in our airports. Our most recent project, implemented at the International Terminal of Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport, has been accepted by the Airports Carbon Accreditation program initiated by ACI Europe concerning carbon emissions. For us, leaving a healthy environment for future generations is of paramount importance.”

Airport Carbon Accreditation provides a common framework for reporting and reducing carbon emissions from airport operations. For the first time, it sets standards for the reporting of carbon emissions according to a framework that is specifically adapted to the unique complexity of the airport site. It is worth noting that these standards are fully compatible with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) “Greenhouse Gas Protocol” Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standards.

A total of five awards were given at the Summit 2009: Green Initiative of the Year, Low Cost Carrier of the Year, Airport of the year, Airline of the year, and Greatest Passenger Number Increase by an Airport.
